Office National de l’Electricité (ONE) on 20 April announced it had awarded the final major contract for the 40MW Tanafnit- El Borj hydroelectric complex. A grouping of Siemens’ VA Tech, France’s Cegelec and Croatian transformer manufacturer Koncar is to supply and install turbines and other electrical equipment for the complex, where the first phase of work started last November, for the unit to come into service in Q1 2008. The dam is sited 7km from the head of the Oum Er Rbia river, 40km north-east of Khenifra. The project includes two hydroelectric units on the Upper Oum Er Rbia – one of two-by- 9MW and the other two-by-11MW – to produce 220m kWh, to be exported via overhead power lines from two 60 kV substations at the Tanafnit and El Borj plants to go Khenifra. ONE puts the total project cost at 934m dirhams, of which E 61m ($76.9m) has been committed by Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). ONE will finance the remainder from its own resources. ONE observed that the project is happening following an environmental impact study, which identified several problems that have been addressed in developing the scheme. It said the project would save the equivalent of 845t of SO2 , 400t of NO2 and 154,120t of CO2 going into the atmosphere. Tanafnit-El Borj is one of several ONE projects expected to come on stream in November 2007. Additional information: News date: 09/05/2006 |
