The Biomass Energy Strategy (BEST) initiative aims at building awareness and creating a way forward so that the growing demand for biomass energy in Africa can be met in a sustainable manner. Offering tools and instruments for process design, the initiative will support selected governments in developing national biomass energy strategies, addressing traditional household fuelwood and charcoal supply and demand as well as modern form of biomass such as liquid biofuels or biomass power generation.
This approach forms part of the GTZ "Energizing Africa" project's objective to promote cooperation between African states in the energy sector and to advance energy solutions for the majority of the population. The BEST initiative is supported together with the GTZ's Household Energy for Sustainable Development (HERA) advisory project and the EU Energy Initiative (EUEI) Partnership Dialogue Facility.
