South Africa: Stellenbosch University to offer programme in renewable energy

The South African National Energy Research Institute, a division of the Central Energy Fund, has awarded Stellenbosch University the responsibility of being the hub of a postgraduate programme in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies.

Academics and students at the university have done extensive research on renewable energy in the past few years. Several have received international awards for their work.

Professor Wikus van Niekerk, who will head the programme, said: "South Africa has energy concerns so this is an appropriate time to look at renewable energy. We are extremely excited."

Professor Theo von Backström, an expert in wind turbines from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said the programme was vital for South Africa. He said wind turbines were "the fastest-growing energy generating source" internationally.
