South Africa: Hatch Africa Energy prepares solar power plant study for Exxaro

Hatch Africa Energy has been retained by Exxaro Resources to prepare a prefeasibility study for a 200-MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant near the Grootgeluk coal mine in the Limpopo province, South Africa.
The three principal objectives to be determined by this study are:

  1. Does this type of project meet Exxaro's financial investment criteria to justify further expenditure to develop a bankable feasibility study?
  2. What technology and vendor are to be selected for the bankable feasibility who can deliver on a turnkey project with the necessary performance guarantees?
  3. A final decision on the preferred site at Lephalale

Exxaro is evaluating and developing a growth pipeline of renewable energy projects in the solar, wind and co-generation arenas.

The prefeasibility study is scheduled for completion by end of July 2010. Construction is targeted to start in early 2013 and synchronization to the electricity grid is targeted for early 2016.

Hatch Africa Energy in Centurion and Hatch Africa in Woodmead are managing the assignment.
